Description

K.C. Seals Brawn® Seal is a compact double acting rod or piston seal with almost no dead spots. The Brawn® Seal has excellent stability within the groove, meaning it eliminates the risk of seal roll and spiral failure. The Brawn® seal is commonly used as a T-Seal and O-Ring and back-up configuration replacement because of its high pressure rating.

Technical Analysis

High pressure simulation: The FEA analysis shows complete failure of the HNBR O-Ring at 10,000 PSI with the HNBR Brawn seal showing slight failure at the non-sealing surface. Both simulations were done at ambient temperature. brawn seal fig1

Seal Geometry Simulation

To show the importance of the radius that is machined at the non-sealing surface, K.C. Seals has simulated what happens to the sealing surface under compression with a radius (Figure 2.1) and what happens to the sealing surface without a radius (Figure 2.2). As depicted Figure 2.1 shows no pressure trap and a more uniformed sealing surface in comparison with Figure 2.2 where the forces are concentrated in one small area, which happens to be the sealing face, increasing wear and the possibility of failure. To put the radius feature into context; when the force (pressure) is being applied to the sealing surface, the radius changes the direction of the counter force from the sealing surface to the non-sealing surface.
